The current will continue to pass unless disrupted.

In the event of a fire, smoke will get into the chamber and stop the flow of current between the two electrodes. This will trigger the alarm. Ionization smoke alarms work best at detecting fast-moving fires with lots of smoke.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarm

A photoelectric smoke alarm uses a source of light to trigger the alarm. A light beam is sent across the interior of the alarm. The light beam hits a photoelectric sensor. When the light doesn't hit the photoelectric sensor, the alarm is triggered.

What happens is the smoke from a fire will get into the alarm and cause the light particles to get broken up. This will activate the sensor inside of the alarm. Photoelectric smoke alarms are known to work best at detecting slow, smoldering fires.
